Venezia and AC Milan fans battle it out at sea with flares and smoke bombs thrown from boats

Incredible footage has emerged of Venezia and AC Milan fans throwing flares at one of Venice’s many canals.

The city of Venice is built on 118 islands in the middle of the Venetian Lagoon, on the Adriatic Sea.

As a result, one of the most common modes of transportation to Stadio Pierluigi Penzo is by boat.

However, on Sunday the two ultra boats met on the waterway, resulting in a “full sea battle” with flares launched between the boats.

The ferry carrying the fans to the ground both had smoke bombs in the color of their respective teams – red and black.

Milan were able to easily reach the top of Serie A by dismissing Venezia in the next game.

The French defender grabbed an unusual brace after adding to Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s initial strike to sink the Venetian’s 3-0.

And the misery of Venezia did not end there, and Michael Svoboda received his marching orders just before the hour.

Milan boss Stefano Pioli told Sky Italia: “This has to be the year we prove ourselves. We have to show that we are competitive again.”

Venice fans took to the canals over the summer when they were promoted back to Serie A for the first time in 19 years.

The fall of the Lagunari from the top of Italian football is almost as spectacular as their rise up the pyramid.

In 2015, US owner Joe Tacopina brought the club out of bankruptcy and re-founded the club under the name Venezia FC.

Venezia were a fourth-tier, semi-professional team in the six years since they managed to make their way to Serie A.
