Aston Villa and Southampton fans clash over Ralph Hasenhuttl links after Dean Smith sacking

Southampton boss Ralph Hasenhuttl has emerged as a possible candidate to replace Dean Smith at Aston Villa

According to the Telegraph, the Austrian, along with Rangers manager Steven Gerrard, is considered among the potential candidates for the vacancy at Villa Park after Dean Smith was sacked.

Smith was fired on Sunday afternoon, just two days after watching his side lose for the fifth time in a row in the Premier League, beaten 1-0 by Southampton thanks to Adam Armstrong’s third-minute goal at St Mary’s.

The bookmakers have already turned their attention to who could replace Smith in the Villa hotseat, with former Liverpool midfielder Gerrard the current favourite, ahead of John Terry.

Hasenhuttl, who has been at Saints since December 2018 and managed 127 games at Southampton, is currently rated 20/1 for the Villa role.

But the fact that he has been linked has given Aston Villa and Southampton fans a say on social media, with the links following a summer in which Danny Ings signed for Villa from Saints , while the Midlands side failed in their bid to sign James. Ward-Prowse.

Here is what they said.

Smith has become the fifth Premier League manager to be sacked this season, following Xisco Munoz (Watford), Steve Bruce (Newcastle), Nuno Espirito Santo (Tottenham) and Daniel Farke (Norwich City).

He is the second manager to lose his job at the weekend, after Norwich opted to part ways with Farke following the Canaries’ 2-1 win at Brentford.

In the statement confirming Smith’s exit, Villa said “the process of replacing Dean will now begin and the club will update supporters in due course”.
